Barcelona defender Hector Bellerin opens up on his future as his contract expire in June.
Hector Bellerin, a defender for Barcelona, emphasized that he is content with his situation at the team but that he has no control over whether his contract will be extended in an exclusive interview with Catalunya Radio.
The 27-year-old former La Masia trainee returned to Barça this past summer after his contract with Arsenal was dissolved. He did so on a free transfer.
Due to the Blaugrana’s Financial Fair Play concerns, Bellerin only agreed to a one-year contract. Based on his performances, it has been suggested that a talk about an extension will take place in January.
On his return to Barcelona, things have not gone well for Bellerin. Due to fitness issues, the right-back has had difficulty playing, and when manager Xavi Hernandez has given him a chance, he hasn’t done well.
So, it’s still unclear whether the club will offer him a new deal before his current one ends. Bellerin also stated that although it is beyond of his control, he is glad to be returning to Barcelona and would like to renew.
“It was very nice to return home. At the moment I have signed a one-year contract and we are waiting to see how everything goes for both parties. Renewing is something that does not depend on me, but I am very happy at Barça,” he said.
The Spanish defender also talked about his experiences since joining his old team, and how difficult it has been for him to get playing time.
“It’s a dream I’ve always had, so I’m very thrilled to be here and to be able to enjoy playing for Barça. It’s usually more difficult to get in when you arrive on the final day of the transfer window and haven’t participated in preseason, he remarked.
However, I’m pleased with how both personally and in terms of football everything is progressing.
Bellerin also asserted that Xavi Hernandez, the team’s manager, has a clear idea of what he wants from the group, saying:
“There have been numerous injuries, and the team is extremely new… Because it takes time to do tasks properly, these initiatives require time to yield results. The team and Xavi are very clear about what we want, and we’re working toward it little by little.
Bellerin continued, “We are disappointed. Barcelona was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League. We had high expectations for ourselves in the Champions League. We were unable to pass the groups due to a series of coincidences, leaving us with a terrible aftertaste.
But the right-back stressed that Barcelona must still contend for each of the four titles because the team is still in those games.
We are still competing in four events. In La Liga, we’re doing great. It is the obligation of playing for Barça to win every competition, he continued.
