De Jong reveals decision on Chelsea or Manchester United move as he talks situation at Barcelona.
Over the past year or two, Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona has been a mystery. Despite being one of the most gifted midfielders in European soccer, the player has had trouble rising to the top of the Barça team.
De Jong recently discussed his transfer dilemma earlier this summer in an interview with Ziggosport (h/t Fabrizio Romano). He also discussed his position on the first team, encouraging himself to do well in order to become a starter.
Man United and Chelsea bids? I was at ease. In May, I made the decision to stay. When asked about his future, de Jong stated, “My viewpoint has never changed.”
The Dutchman continued by reaffirming his intention to stay at Barcelona for the summer, despite persistent rumors suggesting he might leave Camp Nou.
“I maintained my composure, but you can expect pressure to increase from all directions. It never perplexed me since I wanted to stay at Barça, he continued.
De Jong was also questioned about reports that Barcelona was eyeing Ruben Neves as a potential replacement for Sergio Busquets and that he might leave Camp Nou in 2023.
“It depends on what I want and what the club wants. The athlete retorted, “I want to play in a role that best utilizes my strengths and allows me to perform at my peak.
De Jong has struggled to solidify himself as a regular member of Barcelona’s first team since the start of the year. He has only made three league starts, which places him below Busquets, Pedri, and Gavi in the lineup.
Busquets’ lackluster performance in midweek, though, has led many to speculate that de Jong would get a surprise start when Barcelona plays Real Madrid later tomorrow evening in the storied El Clasico.
