Dean Henderson attacks Manchester United over false promise of becoming the club’s number one goalkeeper over David De Gea.
Dean Henderson alleges that after being informed that he would be Man United’s starting goalkeeper, he turned down many loan offers.
After revealing that he turned down many loan offers last summer after being assured that he would be the team’s first-choice goalkeeper, Henderson has criticized Manchester United.
The goalie left Old Trafford this summer on a loan to Nottingham Forest after growing impatient with his lack of playing time there. Many had anticipated that Henderson, who made his first team debut during the 2020–21 season, would eventually take over as the club’s No. 1 player.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer assured him that he would keep his spot in the starting lineup the next season, but a case of covid ended his year and allowed David de Gea to retake his position in goal.
The on-loan goalkeeper has now taken an extraordinary dig at his parent club, saying they “wasted” 12 months of his career, in a candid interview with talkSPORT.
Because I was promised the No. 1 slot last summer, I turned down a lot of excellent loans, but they wouldn’t let me leave. “It was annoying. At my age, it’s very terrible to just sit around and waste a year. I was indignant.”
He went on: “Coming out of the Euro squad, I spoke with someone who said, “You’re coming back here to be the #1 goalie.” Unfortunately, nobody followed through on anything they said to me after I purchased Covid.”
