Former Barcelona captain Lionel Messi makes history as he breaks Pele’s record last night.
In the UEFA Champions League match on Tuesday against Shakhtar Donetsk, Lionel Messi shone brightest at Parc des Princes.
The Argentine contributed to two goals and two assists, which enabled Paris Saint-Germain to win easily 7-2 that evening. The victory enabled the French giants to qualify for the competition’s knockout round.
With his performance against Shakhtar Donetsk, Messi became the first player to have more than ten goals and ten assists throughout all competitions in the top five leagues in Europe.
But he also reached other significant milestones that evening. Messi really broke Pele’s record for most goals and assists combined, making history in the process.
The legendary Brazilian player contributed to 1,126 goals over the course of his illustrious career. With four goals against Shakhtar Donetsk, Messi has now eclipsed that mark, bringing his career total to 1,127.
Messi is now the oldest player to ever record two goals and two assists in a single Champions League match at the age of 35.
The broken records are simply an indicator of Messi’s excellent start to the campaign which has seen him rack up 11 goals and 12 assists in 16 competitive appearances.
His performances have been critical in helping PSG remain at the top of Ligue 1 and one would expect him to play an even more important role as the French giants look to conquer the Champions League for the first time.
