Former Man United and Chelsea manager could become the next Real Madrid coach with Ancelotti stepping down.
An intriguing update on Jose Mourinho was provided by a recent article from La Repubblica (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
Currently serving as AS Roma’s head coach is the renowned Portuguese tactician. The Italian newspaper claims that there is a chance he could leave the team at the end of the current campaign.
This is due to Mourinho’s uncertainty regarding Roma’s long-term plan. His dysfunctional interactions with the club’s owners are another factor that may lead to his resignation in 2023.
The report goes on to say that Real Madrid is one of the teams keeping a close eye on the situation and may try to sign Mourinho at the end of the season if Carlo Ancelotti leaves.
The current Santiago Bernabeu contract for Ancelotti expires in 2024. The Merengues won a double last season under the Italian, which included the UEFA Champions League.
However, the club has fallen behind in the race for the league championship this season, and their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign did not end well.
An early exit from the Champions League could lead to a flurry of rumors about Ancelotti’s future at the club, especially given that they were paired against English powerhouse Liverpool.
Mourinho may be useful in this situation. The Portuguese manager of Real Madrid previously won the league title in 2011–12 and recorded a points-per-game ratio of 2.3 in 178 games.
Mourinho is still remembered by Real Madrid, and they consider him a strong candidate to succeed Ancelotti. However, the club’s performance this year and how they close out the 2022–23 season will have a significant impact on the Portuguese’s potential return to Santiago Bernabeu.
Regarding his future at AS Roma, Mourinho seems destined to leave the team at the end of the current campaign. In his 75 competitive matches as the Giallorossi’s manager, he has led them to 40 victories. Last season, he also helped them win the UEFA Europa Conference League.
