France players subject to racist abuse after World cup defeat to Argentina, including Tchouameni.
The racist remarks made about two French football heroes after their tragic World Cup final loss to Argentina have been denounced by the football community.
After a 3-3 draw was played out in extra time, France lost to Lionel Messi’s team in a 4-2 penalty shootout.
With Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick and Lionel Messi’s confirmation as one of the best players in history, it was arguably one of the greatest World Cup finals ever.
However, racial abuse aimed against the French team of Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni has cast a cloud over the championship.
Coman’s attempt was stopped by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, and Tchouameni’s attempt was wide. Both players failed to convert from the spot.
As supporters responded to the loss, the players afterwards received “disgraceful” comments on social media.
The messages brought back memories of the heinous abuse that Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka of the English national team endured after the European final.
In the championship game versus Italy, all three players also missed penalty kicks.
Bayern Munich, Coman’s club team, was quick to issue a statement in support of the winger and denouncing the conduct of others online.
“FC Bayern firmly condemn the racist remarks made towards Kingsley Coman,” read the tweet from the account. You have the support of the FC Bayern family, King. Racism has no place in either our culture or in sports.
The tweets were denounced by football fans online, who called them “disgraceful” and “disgusting.”
These hateful remarks on a few of the France player’s Instagram postings, a supporter wrote. Disgusting. Coman and Tchouameni, advance.
Following the World Cup loss, Tchouameni shared his feelings on Instagram.
Bitterness and frustration will take time to process, he wrote. We shall continue to attempt everything till the very end. I accepted responsibility for the failure, and I’m the first to apologize.
But I am confident that the French Team’s future is promising, especially if we have you on our side.
