Just stop oil protest, blocking the viewers during Matchday, who are these people and why do they keep locking themselves to the goalposts. These protesters have shown up in the last two EPL games.
Who are Just Stop Oil?
Just Stop Oil protest are a successor group to Insulate Britain, who spent the autumn blocking Britain’s roads to highlight the need for home insulation.
A total of 14 of Insulate Britain’s activists were jailed – and a further 74 are facing criminal charges.
One of those jailed was 21-year-old student Louis McKechnie. In January, he told the Big Issue Insulate Britain would be wrapping things up.
What do ‘Just Stop Oil’ want?
The clue’s in the name. The group’s mission statement reads: “We must urgently end our reliance on fossil fuels to avoid irreversible changes in the earth’s climate system.
“We cannot continue to burn fossil fuels in the belief that future developments in carbon capture and storage and other so-called ‘unicorn technologies’ will allow us to suck vast quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.”
Who starts ‘just stop oil protest?
Though Mckechnie’s photos went viral, but he was not the first protester to invade the pitch during Matchday. While Arsenal play Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium, a protester locked himself to a goalposts.
Mckechnie storms the pitch during the Everton vs Newcastle game and he locked himself on the goalposts.
Reports stated that Mckechnie got arrested for his actions during the game, he is a supporter of the just stop oil and the 21-year-old is not stopping yet.
During the West Ham game against Tottenham today, two protesters protesters storms the pitch while the male locked himself on the goalposts.
Both fans stopped play for a few minutes and they got arrested.
They want their voices to be heard by the UK Government because I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.
