Lionel Messi overtakes Cristiano Ronaldo in non-penalty goals scored after Lyon masterclass.
Despite playing 150 fewer games than Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi has surpassed him in the ranks for the most goals scored without taking a penalty.
On Sunday night, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Lyon 1-0 thanks to a goal from the 35-year-old superstar.
So far in his professional career, Messi has scored 672 goals other than penalties. While Ronaldo has 671 goals.
PSG’s lone goal against Lyon in Ligue 1 was scored by Messi. In the fifth minute of play, he scored to give them a 1-0 victory.
Messi now has 672 non-penalty goals, surpassing Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo by one.
Despite having played 150 fewer games than the Portugal international, Messi has now passed Ronaldo in the standings.
Ronaldo, who seems to be growing increasingly dissatisfied at United, would be dismayed to see his adversary break yet another record.
Despite this, Ronaldo has nevertheless made the national team more often than Messi. The United forward has played for Portugal in 189 matches and has competed in four World Cups, five European Championships, a Nations League Final, and a Confederations Cup.
Messi has played for Argentina in 162 matches, including four World Cups and six Copa Americas. He has only ever won one international trophy, though.
Additionally, Ronaldo has scored more goals overall. In 941 games throughout all competition for four different clubs, he has scored 699 goals.
Additionally, between 2010–11 and 2015–16, Ronaldo scored more than 50 goals for Real Madrid six times in a row.
For two clubs, Barcelona and PSG, Messi has scored 688 goals in 822 competitive games in all competitions.
Additionally, from 2008-09 and 2020-21, Messi scored more than 30 goals for Barcelona 13 times in a row.
But according to Vitinha, who has played with both Messi and Ronaldo, the two world-class athletes are actually more similar than people realize.
“There are many more things that unite them than things that separate them,” Vitinha replied in response to O Jogo.
They all have unique playing styles and personality traits, yet they share a great deal in common.
“Part of it is the urge to always want more, without considering what they have already accomplished.”
Both Messi and Ronaldo are employed by clubs that are still very young. In August 2021, Messi moved to PSG from Barcelona, and in August 2021, Ronaldo returned to Manchester United from Juventus.
When it was announced that Ronaldo would be coming back to Old Trafford after a 12-year absence, United supporters were ecstatic.
His second stay at the United got off to a dream start when he scored twice against Newcastle in September.
Messi was having a hard time adjusting following his painful departure from Barcelona in the meanwhile.
The Argentine superstar score just once in 11 Ligue 1 appearances and failed to keep his fitness.
But things quickly turned around. As Messi started to flourish, Ronaldo found himself on the bench.
In 14 Ligue 1 starts, Messi went on to score five goals and dish out 10 assists. In the French top division, he had at last found his footing.
Ronaldo, however, was in poor form while working for interim manager Ralf Rangnick.
In seven games played in January and February, he scored just once.
Since then, Ronaldo has struggled and under Erik ten Hag, he has spent the majority of the 2022–2023 Premier League season on the bench.
While Ronaldo has fallen behind Messi in terms of non-penalty goals scored in the French top division, the latter has continued to shine there.
