A recent article from Mundo Deportivo provided an intriguing update on Charlie O’Connell’s future.
One of the most gifted players to emerge from the Peterborough United youth academy is the youngster. Grant McCann, the head coach, confirmed that he might be able to leave the team for free in 2023.
The manager of Peterborough has since acknowledged that O’Connell might have received offers from Barcelona, which prevented him from extending his deal with the team.
At the conclusion of the current campaign, O’Connell’s contract with Peterborough United will expire. The team has approached him about signing a new contract, but he has no plans to do so soon and will leave the team as a free agent in the summer.
“We almost immediately after the Plymouth game offered him a new four-and-a-half-year contract, but Charlie isn’t signing.
“Clearly, his agent has informed him that Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona are rooting for him. We see a real path for Charlie, so this is really frustrating for us,” McCann said as quoted in the aforementioned report.
O’Connell, a center-back by trade, has appeared in four professional games for Peterborough at the age of 19. However, McCann affirmed that he won’t play for the team unless his contract is extended.
As a result, Barcelona is now free to pursue O’Connell, who will be qualified to sign a pre-contract with the club in January. However, it will be intriguing to see what the defender’s future holds given that Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also in the running.
