Manchester United and Chelsea joined Bayern Munich and Liverpool in the race to sign Barcelona midfield talent Pablo Gavi.
Over the past year, Barcelona midfield sensation Gavi has emerged as one of the most intriguing young footballers in Europe.
Under former coach Ronald Koeman, the 18-year-old sensation made his first-team debut at Camp Nou and has since established himself as a mainstay in the squad as well as a regular for the Spanish national team.
Naturally, Gavi has drawn the attention of prestigious clubs from all over Europe. The young prodigy had drawn interest from both Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
And according to recent sources, the La Masia graduate’s contract status at Barcelona is still being watched by the German champions.
However, according to Moi Llorens of ESPN, despite the keen interest Bayern Munich has exhibited, Gavi has no plans to leave Barcelona and is optimistic that his tenure will be extended past the current season.
At the conclusion of the season, Gavi’s current contract with the Blaugrana is set to expire. There are no immediate causes for concern, though, since he and his agent, Ivan de la Pena, have come to terms with the club on an extension.
When Gavi turned 18 last month, it was anticipated that Barcelona would formally announce the deal; however, this has not happened. But now that the transfer window has ended, both parties are scrambling to find a time to sign the paperwork and formally announce the contract extension.
Gavi has started each of Barcelona’s first four La Liga games this season, showing good form. The 18-year-old is currently in front of seasoned players like Franck Kessie and Frenkie de Jong in the Camp Nou pecking order.
So, it is no surprise that the Catalan giants desire to tie down his contract renewal at the earliest feasible.
Gavi continues to wear the #30 jersey because he is still not listed in La Liga as a member of the first team but rather as a subsidiary. However, Barca intends to add him to the senior squad in January and give him the #6 jersey that was formerly worn by the team’s manager Xavi.
