Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract will be terminated following an agreement between Manchester United and him.
After Ronaldo gave a remarkable interview to Piers Morgan last week, United took the “first steps” to ejecting him from the team.
In the past week, the club has sped up that process by announcing in a statement that Ronaldo’s second stint at Old Trafford is over.
According to a mutual agreement, Cristiano Ronaldo will leave Manchester United with immediate effect.
“The team wishes him and his family the best of luck in the future and expresses gratitude for his enormous contribution during his two stints at Old Trafford, where he scored 145 goals in 346 games.
Everyone at Manchester United is still committed to building on the team’s success under Erik ten Hag and collaborating to produce results on the field.”
In 2021, 12 years after his initial departure for Real Madrid, Ronaldo made his way back to United.
It was believed that signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would help United win their first Premier League championship in nine years.
Despite having a strong individual season with 24 goals across all competitions, United struggled and had their lowest-ever point total as they finished sixth in the table.
In the summer, United took action and hired Erik ten Hag, who didn’t think Ronaldo could function in his squad.
After United missed out on the Champions League, the 37-year-old attempted to leave the club in the summer.
However, no offers came in, so he was compelled to stay at the club. Ronaldo has scored three goals for United this season, the most recent of which came in a 3-0 Europa League victory over FC Sheriff last month.
Ronaldo charged ten Hag with disrespect during his interview with Morgan. Anger peaked during the 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in October, when Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel rather than making a substitute appearance.
I don’t respect him (Ten Hag) because he doesn’t respect me, Ronaldo said to Morgan. I won’t ever have respect for you if you don’t have respect for me.
Cristiano Ronaldo statement: “Following conversations with mufc we have mutually agreed to end our contract early”
Cristiano Ronaldo statement: “I love mufc and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future.”
