Martin Odegaard Is The Second Youngest Premier League Captain After Arsenal Announcement.
Martin Odegaard has been named the new club captain of Arsenal ahead of the 2022–2023 season, however there is still a younger Premier League captain.
On Saturday afternoon, the Arsenal defeated Sevilla 6-0 in the Emirates Cup and announced it before the game.
Odegaard first transferred from Real Madrid to Arsenal in January 2021 on a temporary basis before making the switch permanently the following summer.
He leads the Norway national team and is regarded as a key member of Mikel Arteta’s team.
The fact that the 23-year-old midfielder leads his club and country despite his attitude and character speaks volumes.
Odegaard is now one of the English top-youngest flight’s captains, according to the release.
Declan Rice, a player for West Ham United who turned 23 in January and a month after Odegaard, receives the honor after taking over as captain from Mark Noble last season.
The defender for Bournemouth, Lloyd Kelly, is the same age but will turn 24 in October.
Last year, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was relieved of his captaincy by Alexandre Lacazette due to disciplinary issues.
Since the France international left for Lyon, Arteta has had the opportunity to continue retooling his team.
According to a statement from Arsenal: “Martin Odegaard has been named the new captain of the men’s first team, and we are thrilled to announce this.
“Since joining Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in January 2021, initially on loan, the 23-year-old has had a significant impact, playing 60 times and scoring nine goals.
“With 43 caps for Norway, for whom he has served as captain since March 2021, Odegaard has experience holding the position of leadership.
We wish Martin luck in his new role as our captain.”
Arsenal defeated Sevilla easily to maintain their unblemished preseason record.
The Emirates Stadium went wild as Arsenal went up 4-0 after 19 minutes thanks to braces from Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka.
In the second half, Jesus was able to complete his hat-trick, and Eddie Nketiah added a late sixth goal.
Last season, Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League and fell two points short of qualifying for the Champions League.
On Friday night, they travel to Crystal Palace to begin the season. They will be seeking retribution for their 3-0 loss suffered at Selhurst Park in April.
