Mikel Arteta confirmed loan exit
Nuno Tavares has agreed on a season-long loan with Ligue 1 team Marseille.
Nuno Tavares, a defender for Arsenal, has agreed to a season-long loan with Marseille of Ligue 1.
According to a statement on the Gunners website: “Nuno Tavares has signed a season-long loan agreement with Olympique Marseille of Ligue 1.
“The left-back, who is 22 years old, came to us from Benfica in the summer of 2021. He made 28 appearances for us in all competitions last season, contributing twice and scoring once.
“On his debut outing for the team, the Portuguese Under-21 international scored against Rangers in a preseason friendly in July 2021. In our 3-1 home victory over Manchester United in the Premier League back in April, Nuno scored his first competitive goal for Arsenal.
“Everyone at Arsenal wishes Nuno the best of luck with Marseille this next season.
The financing agreement is contingent upon the resolution of regulatory procedures.
Arsenal has experienced cover at left-back after signing Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City. That means Tavares is no longer needed at the position, at least for the time being, and his time in Ligue 1 should allow him to play regularly.
Arsenal will be hoping the move has the same impact as it did with William Saliba, who spent last season on loan at the same club. The Frenchman now looks ready to compete for a place in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up and could well make his official debut for the Gunners against Crystal Palace on Friday night.
