Paris Saint-Germain offered Lionel Messi a new contract to block a move to Barcelona.
According to Manu Carreno, Paris Saint-Germain has reportedly offered the former Barcelona captain a new contract to extend his stay at the club amid growing rumors about Lionel Messi’s future beyond the current season.
After Barça declined to renew his contract, Messi signed for PSG as a free agent during the summer of last year. The Argentine superstar has picked things up in 2022 after a sluggish start to life in France. He was a vital contributor to his team’s Ligue 1 victory last season.
The 35-year-old has been in excellent form throughout the current campaign as well, scoring six goals and dishing out eight assists in only 11 games across all competitions for PSG.
At the conclusion of the season, his agreement with the team is set to expire. Barcelona is reportedly waiting in the wings to pounce and re-sign Messi for free next summer.
After the way the former captain left the team last year, it has been said that club president Joan Laporta wants to bring him back. The team is already looking at how to make it happen and bring Messi back to Camp Nou.
PSG, however, won’t give up easily because they intend to keep Messi at the team past the current season.
In order to achieve this, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has been presented with a new contract extension from the Ligue 1 champions that includes a one-year option for an additional twelve months, according to Manu Carreno.
The compensation being offered would be comparable to what he is reportedly making now, which is about €30 million annually.
According to reports, Messi will review the offer from PSG before making a decision about his future, which is probably going to wait until after the FIFA World Cup in Qatar is over.
Barcelona must move quickly if they want to re-sign Messi for the upcoming season given PSG’s move to keep the superstar.
