PSG and Wijnaldum has agreed to part ways this summer after one season with the club and AS Roma are close to signing him.
Zeki Celik, Paulo Dybala, and Namanja Matic are also recent additions to the squad, and Wijnaldum will join them as Mourinho looks to build on his success from his first campaign at the Stadio Olimpico.
Wijnaldum spent five successful seasons as a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team, winning the Premier League and Champions League during his time at the club. He then moved to the Parc des Princes.
Before PSG swooped in and offered the Dutchman a salary reportedly around £150,000 per week, Wijnaldum had looked set to sign for Barcelona after his contract expired at the end of the 2020–21 season.
Despite having an impressive resume, Gianluigi Donarumma, Sergio Ramos, and Lionel Messi were among the high-profile players who joined the French club before Wijnaldum.
The 31-year-old struggled to carve out a consistent role for himself in PSG’s star-studded squad after starting the first four league games of the season. He increasingly found himself reduced to a supporting role as the Parisian club won their 10th league championship.
While serving his country overseas in February, Wijnaldum complained about not getting enough playing time.
He told reporters, “It is something different and that takes getting used to. I was eagerly anticipating the next step until this unfortunate incident occurred. It is very challenging.
Even though the former Dutch Player of the Year would later claim his words had been misunderstood, his playing time did not increase; from Christmas until the end of the season, he started just five league games.
Mourinho won the UEFA Conference League for Roma, giving the team its first European championship since 1961, and guided the team to a sixth-place finish in Serie A during his first full season as manager of the club.
