Real Madrid midfielder Tchouameni revealed the reason why he snubbed Liverpool for Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid.
Aurelien Tchouameni, a star for Real Madrid, has explained why he turned down the opportunity to sign with Liverpool in the summer.
The midfielder, who was selected for the France World Cup squad and might face Australia on Tuesday night, transferred from Monaco to Real.
He moved in July. According to reports, Los Blancos paid an initial fee of €80 million – which could rise to €100 million – to secure his services.
Tchouameni has been a consistent starter for Carlo Ancelotti’s team since moving to La Liga, appearing in all but one of the games he has been available for from the start in all competitions.
The midfielder will now try to shine in Qatar as France defends their title from 2018. He recovered from a knock to play in Real’s last two games before the World Cup.
He was frequently mentioned as a potential transfer to Liverpool prior to his move to Spain.
Although he did not identify the player, Jurgen Klopp acknowledged in August that the Reds were interested in a specific midfielder during the summer who ultimately chose to play elsewhere.
We were looking for a midfielder, but that midfielder chose to join another club, the man said. That could occur.
Some players are currently unavailable, but they are still very interesting to us. That being the case, we can choose accordingly.
Tchouameni has now revealed why he turned down a transfer to the Reds.
Tchouameni on Real moving forward, Liverpool rejection
Prior to the World Cup, Tchouameni discussed the factors that led to his decision to join Real in an interview with the French publication Le Parisien (quotes via Goal): “Liverpool was the first to step up. We had conversations.
Then Real showed up. And everything was crystal clear in my head. Real and not another was it. The world’s largest club is this one.
“There is no better if you want to make history in your sport or claim to have accomplished great things. So I didn’t think twice before acting.
As long as there is interest, we make every effort to go there, I told my agent. I had already been trained.
“Even though I was pleased to be contacted by PSG, my decision was already made when Paris showed up.”
Tchouameni and France will compete in World Cup Group D against Australia, Denmark, and Tunisia.
