Marco Asensio, a winger for Real Madrid, put an end to rumors that he was considering a transfer to rival team Barcelona in an interview with El Chiringuito TV (h/t Fabrizio Romano).
The 26-year-old has a few months left on his Real Madrid contract and has previously stated that he would not rule out moving to Barça if the right circumstances arose.
It sparked rumors connecting him to the Catalan team, and some even suggested that the Blaugrana, who are currently leading Real Madrid in the La Liga title race, would be keeping an eye on him at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Asensio, however, appears to have disqualified a transfer to Barcelona at this time, even though he has left the door open for a departure in the summer when his contract expires.
Barcelona wasn’t ever a possibility. Real Madrid makes me happy, and I’m in great health. But you never know for sure. Then, it wasn’t accurate to say that I was considering Barça,” Asensio claimed, as cited by Fabrizio Romano.
Asensio’s contract situation has made headlines. It appeared at the beginning of the season that Real Madrid would not offer him a new contract and that he would become a free agent in 2023.
However, things have taken a sharp turn for the better after the 26-year-old winger showed his value to the team with some standout performances in the weeks before the World Cup break.
Even though Asensio has mostly played off the bench for Real Madrid, he has managed a tally of three goals and three assists in 15 games across all competitions.
Asensio, who is currently a member of Spain’s FIFA World Cup squad, will probably be crucial for Luis Enrique’s team in Qatar. It might help to increase the level of interest he is generating
Real Madrid will ideally want to renew the winger as soon as possible because he can negotiate with any club of his choosing starting in January.
