Robert Lewandowski confirmed new Jersey number as the Polish striker was presented in front of 59,000 thousand fans at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona has chosen to give Robert Lewandowski the number 9 shirt that belonged to Memphis Depay.
Today at 12:30 PM CET, Lewandowski will give a presentation in front of what is predicted to be a record-breaking audience. The official jersey and number will be given to the player today.
The number nine, which was originally worn by Luis Suarez, was transferred to Martin Braithwaite in the 2020–21 season when el Pistolero left to join Atletico Madrid.
It was only worn by the Dane for one season until Memphis Depay assumed over. He was Barcelona’s leading scorer the previous season but lost his spot as Xavi entered the picture.
Memphis has now been asked to quit the team due to the entrance of Raphinha and of course, Lewandowski in the summer. Even though he declined that offer, the team has the right to unilaterally take away his jersey number.
Barcelona wants Lewandowski to take the number 9, but without a doubt the most crucial factor is due to business considerations.
They have already given famous numbers to people, such #10 to Ansu Fati and #8 to Pedri. The #6 is soon anticipated to go to Gavi.
Giving Lewa the #9 will significantly boost jersey sales, particularly internationally. In Poland and some regions of Germany, where the former Bayern Munich striker has a cult following, shirt sales will undoubtedly increase significantly. Either way, should Barcelona actually go through with taking Memphis’ shirt number, the burden is on the player to force his exit.
