Sir Alex Ferguson makes Arsenal ‘relegation’ joke in Manchester United chat, after he returned back to the club.
Prior to the start of the Premier League on Friday, the iconic Manchester United manager made a joke about how the Gunners will be “relegated” this year. Ferguson’s comment was directed at Arsenal.
Arsenal was one of Ferguson’s fiercest adversaries during his tenure as manager of United, having faced Arsene Wenger for more than 20 years. Ferguson frequently defeated the Gunners despite losing to them in the 1998, 2002, and 2004 league title contests.
Ferguson left his position as manager in 2013, but he continues to serve as a club director and is usually spotted in and around Old Trafford.
Ferguson was also seen on tape on Friday conversing with jockey and Arsenal supporter Frankie Dettori. And when asked how he anticipated Arsenal performing this campaign, he joked: “Frank is familiar with the phrase “Arsenal are going down this year.” He himself told me that!”
Both Arsenal and United have struggled in recent years to relive the glory days under their old managers, finishing outside the top four in 2017. This season, both will be fighting to return to Champions League qualification, a far cry from Ferguson and Wenger’s era.
