Transfer News: Barcelona and Real Madrid are set to battle it out for Alphonso Davies next summer.
Even though Barcelona already have three left-backs on their books already, it has seemingly not stopped them from further looking at options to reinforce the position.
Indeed, as reported by SPORT, Barcelona have joined Real Madrid in keeping tabs on Bayern Munich speedster Alphonso Davies.
The 21-year-old is one of the most exciting young full-backs in the game, having earned his name for the speed, agility and attacking contributions he provides from the left-back position for the German champions.
At this point, it is widely known that Barcelona had the opportunity to recruit Davies when he was still representing his youth team Vancouver Whitecaps FC. They failed to act quickly enough, though, and the kid joined Bayern Munich in January 2019.
The Canadian international has since excelled at the Allianz Arena and grown into a vital member of the club, despite having to battle with some injury issues.
Given his success and development, it should not be shocking that Barcelona, their bitter rivals, are once again keeping tabs on the 21-year-old. However, they will have to contend with Real Madrid, who are also considering signing the Bayern Munich speedster.
Alejandro Balde, Marcos Alonso, and Jordi Alba are the current left-back options for Barça. The latter, however, has lost favor this year, and the club is aggressively attempting to unload him as soon as possible to avoid paying his enormous wages.
Alonso was only hired this past summer, and despite his impending 32nd birthday in December and one-year deal, he hardly seems like a long-term solution. Even though his contract can be extended, Barcelona might be better off finding a replacement for Balde.
Nevertheless, it won’t be simple for Bayern Munich to get Davies because Real Madrid is also interested in him and the 21-year-old is under contract to Die Roten until 2025.
It’s unclear whether or when Barcelona intends to sign Davies. The Catalan giants are now keeping tabs on the rising star.
