Video: Dani Alves gets emotional tribute from Barcelona, following his return to Camp Nou for the Joan Gamper trophy.
Barcelona came under harsh criticism earlier this summer when they decided not to keep Dani Alves as a player.
The club legend’s contract was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2021/22 season, but Barça had the option to extend it at least through the end of the current calendar year.
However, the team decided to let him go, which upset a lot of the supporters, particularly because the player had spent years working for the team but was not given a proper send-off.
However, it appears that Alves has been given a proper farewell by Barcelona, in front of a full Camp Nou stadium, before of the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Pumas UNAM.
The seasoned defender was greeted by many of his former Barça colleagues, including Sergio Busquets, who was holding a jersey with his name on the back, and earned a standing ovation from the Barcelona supporters.
In recognition of Alves’ years of devotion to the club, Joan Laporta, the club president, also presented him with a piece of silverware.
Dani Alves experienced an emotional moment, but he will need to put those sentiments aside for the next hour or so as Barcelona and Pumas UNAM square off in the Joan Gamper trophy match.
